The Pressure On The Democrats

by Rich Schiff

There is Something Very Much Lacking in The Presence of Dr. John Furey, Democratic Committeeman in Dover Township, and Democratic Candidate for Mayor in the coming election.

There is a noticeable dulling of the eyes, and a blank stare when not addressing the room. John Furey seems to be in a kind of trance, until a word from his former friend John Russo stirs him to a "fury" in a direction the rest of the panel and audience have a tough time following.

The control that Dr. Jack Moriarty has over Furey & Larsen must be extraordinary. They seem unable to listen to reason and always ready to pounce. Their defensive postures have been noted by all in the audience.

Will The Furey/Larsen Team survive the change of Government?

It is a very sad thing for me to witness; two Democrats on the dais at the most recent caucus meeting of the Dover Township Committee unable to command any respect from the rest of the Committee, even though they are reached out to with warmth..

The bitterness abounding on that dais is a terrible thing to witness. Rich Larsen was reduced to a manic, twitching shell of the man he was when he was campaigning. John Furey is now a parrot of Rich Larsen, who is clearly talking the Party Line. Dr. Furey should not be a candidate for Mayor in an election as hotly contended as this one is going to be.

Neither one of them have a bit of skill with parliamentary procedure, so the two lawyers, Russo, and Fiure, along with the veteran Republican Carmine Inteso, run circles around them. It is so unfair, their handicap, that the Democrats seem unfairly matched. You can actually tell the others feel sorry for them.

The only intelligible things presented by the "pro-active" duo are presented by Larsen. He tries to count beans, but without a clear plan of the needs of the 7th largest township in the state, his whole argument is empty.

He offers 9 million against the Russo bond for 14 million. Larsen argues that the town is broke. Russo argues that the town is not broke yet. Neither one of them really know the exact and specific state of the municipal economy, but they argue and belittle each other, until the Larsen idea is adopted, when it is no better conceived than the Russo bond is.

Larsen is left flip flopping like a fish out of water and most of the time Dr. Furey is leaning back so you cannot see his head or else laughing and joking while serious speeches are made by the taxpayers.

Last night, Mayor Russo tried to present a plan that reflected a request made by Citizens group Leader Angelo DiGiovanni for the formation of a Transition Team to handle the smooth transference of government to the new Mayor next year. It seemed like a good idea. But as Larsen and Furey seem to object to EVERYTHING, the newly shorn Dr. Furey pipes up a complaint and rambles on and on making absolutely no concrete sense.

The Republicans and the audience tried to lean in to better understand what the good Doctor was talking about. No one could make any sense out of it. Russo was surely sorry he had ever introduced the idea. It was put off, till a further date, out of sheer frustration.

John Furey is not Mayoral material. He and Larsen are not really good at this.
Max Puppet has more pizzazz than the both of them. I hate to say this but the Puppet could do a better job, any day.
