Dover Township: The twenty days allowed for reviewing
petition signatures expired but Township Administrator Barbara Iasillo
says the project will be completed in time to make a report at
Tuesday’s township committee meeting.
10,167 petition signatures were filed by a citizens group July 31 to
force a November referendum that could change the form of local
government here from the current township committee to a mayor-council
form.
The Clerk’s office has been evaluating the signatures, and are “very
close” to the level of certifying the number of signatures necessary
to validate the petitions, Iasillo said.
The petitions need about 5600 valid signatures to put the Government
Change question on the ballot.
Prepared To Move Forward With A Constructive Campaign
“We are now prepared to move forward with a vigorous campaign to ask
voters to say ‘YES’ to the most important public question in the
history of our town”, said Angelo DiGiovanni, a leader in Citizens
Alert, the group that initiated the petition drive.
The new form of government provides for the direct election of the
mayor so “we know where the buck stops”, and four wards from which
four of the seven township council members will be elected”,
DiGiovanni said. |
