Clement And York, Afraid Of Losing Control Of The Planning Board, Are
Out Of The Closet, Distorting The Numbers, Desperately Trying To Avoid
A Change Of Government
If
The Voters Pay Attention, The Township Could Get A Completely New
Planning Board, Devoted Only To The Public Interest, With A YES Vote
On Change Of Government Ballot Question
Dover
Planning Board Has Catered To York, Clement And Other Development
Interests For Years
Dover Township:
The one
little item that frightens developers’ attorney Harvey York and
Republican Boss Richard Clement more than anything else is the
prospect of a whole new Planning Board they can’t “work with”.
For
years, the planning board in
Dover
Township has handed the developers nearly everything they asked for,
and the residents and taxpayers have too often been left holding the
bag.
York is
currently suing the township to get construction permits for JAMM
Realty, a 320 unit high density affordable housing development in the
Barnegat Bay estuary approved by the Planning Board for construction
near the county college.
York is
also suing the township to get a court ordered approval on the Home
Depot application on Fischer Boulevard.
The
Planning Board has resisted needed changes to the zoning ordinances
for years because of a cozy relationship with development interests.
Clement And
York
Usually Try To Avoid The Spotlight
This is
why it was something of a surprise when Clement and York surfaced
recently with campaign handouts, both of which cited the same bogus
number of $1.5 million, which they claim it will cost to change the
current township committee to a new government with an elected mayor
and council.

Angelo
DiGiovanni |
Proponents of the new government contend the cost difference to pay
the new mayor and council will be negligible, and there will be “big
savings” because of “huge expenses running into the $$Millions for
party patronage and payroll padding” by the current government will be
eliminated.
Berkeley
Has Mayor-Council Government
And The Mayor Makes $8500
Citizen’s Alert spokesman Angelo DiGiovanni points out that the Mayor
of Berkeley Township, which has exactly the same government as the
referendum proposes, “gets $8500 a year, and each councilman earns
$8000, less than the $8800 plus benefits currently paid to members of
the current Dover Township Committee.”
Planning Board Stacked With Developers’ Cronies
But in
the current “flawed” system, many believe, party bosses insulate
elected officials from the public, and stack the Planning Board with
developers’ cronies, so taxpayers shouldn’t be surprised at the
overdevelopment, traffic gridlock and looming tax increases.
The
Board Chairman, for instance, is employed by the biggest real estate
company in town.
One
Of The Very Best Reasons For Voting YES
Clement
and York are “very concerned with the prospect of dealing with a new
planning board that is not controlled by them”, and DiGiovanni
believes that is “one of the very best reasons for voting YES” on the
proposed government change. (10/9/02)
