Rod Sterling, Probably The Most
Capable Public Official In Lacey Township, Loses To Helen Dela Cruz In
“Clean Campaign”
Lacey Governing Body Remains In
Republican Control, 3-2, With Control Of The Local Government Now On
The Line In 2003
Lacey Township: Township Committeeman Rod Sterling,
probably the most capable public official in Lacey Township, was
beaten handily by Helen Dela Cruz, a former member of the township
committee whose career in public office was notable only for a
virtually blank slate.
Mrs. Dela Cruz showed up for meetings. Now she will again.
Sterling, who brought intelligence and a capacity for hard work to the
governing body, helped keep the local government on the right track.
Lacey Township has one of the lowest municipal tax rates in South
Jersey.
Penetrating Sense Of Humor And A Sharp Wit
But he also brought a penetrating sense of humor and an acerbic wit,
which did not sit too well with some of the stuffed shirts who attend
committee meetings in Lacey.
Sterling had a knack for exploding ego balloons of citizens who showed
up only to hear themselves talk.
He has now paid a price, but his conscience is clear, and he retires
with no major regrets. His sense of humor and his self respect are
intact.
He did a lot for the community - and his work with the Lacey First Aid
will continue without interruption.
Mrs. Dela Cruz promised to do something about overdevelopment and
traffic problems, a promise that she no doubt will discharge, like
Franklin Roosevelt, within the first hundred days after she takes
office on New Years Day.
