“Loyal Opposition” Flops Again As
Furey Looks The Other Way
Dover Township: Everybody on the township committee knew
about the Haines-Clement health benefits scam, but nobody did anything
about it.
GOP Didn’t Think It Was A Problem
The Republicans laughed it off because it was such a small part of
their empire of patronage, political payoffs and payroll padding. They
didn’t think it was any problem: they wanted it that way.
John Furey began moralizing and pontificating about the difference
between right and wrong the day he took office 22 months ago.
Only there was frequently a wide gap that developed between what he
said and what he did.
Dudley Do Right (Furey) Gave Way To
Dudley Do Nothing (Also Furey)
Unfortunately for the taxpayers, Dudley Do Right gave way to Dudley Do
Nothing on a whole host of occasions, even when, by his own standards,
it was time to act and rein in the wrong doers.
John Furey has been advised numerous times over twenty two months in
office about counter productive, wasteful activities both in the
township and at the sewer authority.
But neither he or anybody else on the township committee lifted a
finger to fix them.
The latest oversight involves the scam reported several times by
OceanCountyPolitics•Com where Virginia Haines and Boss and Mrs. R.
C. Clement have been ripping off township taxpayers and DMUA
ratepayers by helping themselves to more than one “free” health
benefits coverage.
The extra health coverages for Haines, the Clements and numerous other
patronage flunkies have wasted more than $300,000 since Haines
invented the practice several years ago.
Furey Promised To Eliminate Waste In Government -
Never Focused On Health Premiums
Furey promised to eliminate waste in government, but he has never even
focused on the huge increase in health insurance premiums in the
current budget, perhaps, in part because he benefits from it.
Implicit in the oath of office taken by every member of the township
committee is an obligation to blow the whistle on obvious abuses of
good public policy. Furey never did.
Is Dudley Do Right’s Failure To Act An Example Of Malfeasance??
In extreme cases like this one, where nobody except a really hardened
patronage pig could believe that it’s somehow just fine to rip the
taxpayers off for more than one $12,500 health coverage, Furey’s
failure to follow through after he was given graphic evidence that the
double dip health insurance scam was endemic in the township, can only
be described as something approaching malfeasance.

In the case of the Clements, RC had Debbie appointed to the DMUA as
one of the worthless “Alternate” Commissioners on the payroll at a
$2000 salary plus health benefits.
Debbie apparently never told the DMUA management she was already
covered by RC’s “free” policy from the township, so she proceeded to
help herself to a second “free husband and wife” policy costing an
extra $8800.
RC’s township policy costs $12,300 because RC, who is 82, is forcing
the township to pay for a “family coverage” which costs about $4600
extra.
Furey Never Asked Any Questions -
Never Requested More Information
Some residents think the insufferable pontificating from Furey is a
ploy to cover up his failure to understand the numbers.
Tin Plated Phoney?? “Comedy” Continues
Others think his maudlin restatements of the obvious cover up the
indifference of a tin plated phoney.
Either way, the “comedy” at town hall is getting exactly the bogus
“Mayor” it deserves. But the real problems of the community will go a
begging again, and this is the real tragedy of Furey’s pathetic
failure to act on a whole host of issues, the double dip health
coverage scandal being one of the smaller ones.
Lots and lots more on this issue in the fullness of time from
