“Top Ten Citizens Instrumental In The Successful Adoption Of The
Change Of Government In Dover Township”
|

Al Santoro |
|

Dan Polifroni |
Two Of Them Are From
Manchester Township, One Is From Berkeley Township, And One Is From
Beachwood
But The Other Seven Are From Dover Township And Their Identities Are
Quite Predictable
Former Chairman
Al Santoro
and
Ortley Beach Honorary Mayor
Dan
Polifroni
Dan Polifroni tried to get Ortley Beach separated from the rest
of Dover Township and turned into a distinct municipality. He didn’t
like the government on the mainland, and his dislike goes back many
years, giving him more experience at not liking the local government
than almost anybody else.
Dan came close, but he didn’t quite succeed in getting Ortley its
freedom.
But, when the change of government opportunity came along this year,
there was Dan Polifroni with bells on - and he had lots of company. A
lot of people didn’t like the township committee, and they didn’t all
live in Ortley Beach either.
Dan likes to write letters to the editor, and he wrote a bunch of very
effective ones in favor of throwing the rascals out and getting a new
and more responsive crew at town hall. Dan attended all of the
Citizens Alert meetings and his advice was invaluable: “Hit ‘em with
both barrels and don’t lie.”
Dan had been lied to more than once too often. Too many Dover Township
politicians looked Dan in the eye and lied to him. He detests lying.
When the votes were counted, there was an astounding margin from the
beach and Bayshore areas, much of it due to Dan Polifroni’s experience
and hard work over many years.
Dan’s considerable influence in the beach communities paid big
dividends and contributed big time to the success of the Change Of
Government effort.

Al Santoro recently retired as Ocean County Democratic Chairman.
His retirement freed him to devote some time to efforts other than
party politics, and when he was asked to help with the Citizens Alert
Change Of Government Vote YES Committee of 10,000 crusade, he readily
agreed, and his help was key to the success of the effort.
Most important, Al offered his help with no political strings
attached.
He raised a big part of the modest budget ($15,000) that was used
effectively to compete successfully with the $100,000 raised by the
Republican State Senate Re-Election PAC (they often appropriate money
for referendum questions in Dover Township), and the Boss Clement
Republican Club and other heavily soiled funds
laundered through God knows where.
"We were a lot more cost effective than they were." said Santoro: "We
made $15,000 go a long way and we told the truth, the whole truth, and
nothing but the truth."
Al is a resident of Beachwood, but he is now an honorary citizen of
Dover Township.
"Everybody in the surrounding communities pays an increasingly
significant price for the excessive development and traffic gridlock
in Toms River; that’s a big reason I supported this important effort”,
said Santoro.
“Maybe this will help get some of these problems straightened out," he
said.
