Toms River: After two years and 28 days on the township committee, “Doctor” John Furey still has never visited the facilities of the Dover Municipal Utilities Authority, despite numerous invitations to do so.

Now he has been appointed Liaison to the Authority which held its first business meeting of the year on Wednesday. But Furey did not show up for the meeting. What else is new?

On Committee Two Years - Never Showed Up At The DMUA

The invitations go back to when Furey was a candidate in 2000 and have been tendered by Authority Executive Director John Broome and, more recently, by Commissioner Robert K. Haelig Jr.

The invitations were offered on the theory that a serious candidate or public official would want to know something about the $300 million public corporation that has kept the town clean and environmentally secure for 52 years, and has not increased its residential rate for more than 19 years.

“Doctor” Furey is now the only member of the township committee who has never seen the inside of a single DMUA facility, and yet he persists in his vendetta to dissolve the authority and rob its assets to subsidize the bloated township budget, an action that would raise the sewer rate which has not been increased since 1984, and produce a huge tax increase within a few years.

Furey refuses to become informed about this vital part of the township government, and has now served notice that he will not attend any DMUA meetings, despite an implied obligation to do so.

Not The First Time Furey Has Blown Off Important Responsibilities

When the township committee met to consider important business last Spring, Furey blew off the obligation to attend a scheduled meeting to fill an important committee vacancy, saying he couldn’t attend because of a “chiropractic emergency”. Everybody knew he was dissimulating.

Then, in December, as the annual reorganization meeting drew closer, with his party in turmoil and Furey the mayor-designate, Furey went to South America on vacation and missed arguably the two most important meetings of the year.

When he got back, a Republi-Crat coalition of greed and patronage was poised to take over the local government, snatching control from the Regular Democrat patronage hogs Furey was prepared to install.

Still Waiting For Furey To Explain And Answer For Irregularities In Democrat Election Disclosures

OceanCountyPolitics is still waiting for Furey to answer for irregularities in Democrat election campaign disclosures, especially those of Richard Larsen, the accountant-candidate whose campaigns made huge payments to Furey’s alter ego, Democratic Boss “Doctor” Jack Moriarty, without giving needed details on concealed contributions and payments.

No Agenda To Stop Overdevelopment And Traffic Gridlock

It was on the Radio, so you couldn’t tell whether his shoes were shined or whether he said it with a straight face, but Furey actually unburdened himself of the following classic inexactitude:

“We set up an agenda to stop overdevelopment and traffic gridlock” Furey said of himself and Russo Jr.

The truth, of course, is that everything they have done since they were sworn in two years ago has had the effect of making overdevelopment worse - and there is more traffic gridlock than ever because of their failure to act. The tragedy is they have no visible agenda to stop overdevelopment and traffic gridlock.  (for 1/26/03)
