With Accusations Of Bullet Vote Campaign For Larsen
OceanCountyPolitics•Com has learned that another situation in the
Democratic Civil War in Dover Township turned to near violence after the
January 2nd township committee reorganization as Gerard Furey, brother of
township committeeman John Furey, was challenged to a fist fight by defeated
Democratic candidate Thomas Rodgers at a party for Democratic faithful at
Basil T’s restaurant.
Gerard Furey’s crime against the regular Democrats was his desire to remain
neutral in the dispute between his friend John Russo Jr. and his Brother
Committeeman John Furey as the lame duck township committee appointed Russo
Jr. Mayor for 2003.

Gerard Furey and Russo Jr. have been friends for many years and the elder
brother Furey was deeply saddened by the separation of the Russo Furey Team.
which infuriated Rodgers and Party boss Jack Moriarty. Chose to remain
neutral over Russo Jr's selection as mayor, a turn of events
which infuriated Rodgers and party Boss “Doctor” Jack Moriarty.
Moriarty Is Still Operating TheRussoWatch•Com Web Site
Moriarty is the operator of a WebSite called TheRussoWatch•Com which is
critical of Russo Jr. and his father, former Senator John Russo Sr.
In the Basil T’s incident, Gerard Furey entered the restaurant and was
immediately confronted by Rodgers who threatened to start a fist fight
because Gerard was continuing his friendship with Russo Jr.
Gerard Furey accepted Rodgers' challenge, but Rodgers was apparently quick
to back down. At that point, the elder brother Furey said he was told by
Moriarty to "take my walking papers and leave." "I am not welcome at a party
my entire family is at?", he asked Moriarty. "That's right," he was told.
"I never supported one over the other - I supported the Russo-Furey team
equally," Gerard Furey said.
Before he really knew what was happening, the police were summoned by
Moriarty for the sole purpose of ejecting him from the party, an
OCPolitics Correspondent noted.
The Basil T’s episode is similar to an election night incident where one of
Moriarty’s chief attendants initiated what amounted to a near physical
attack on Democratic Senator John Russo Sr.

Party Chairman
Jeff Horn |
Democratic Chairman Horn Accuses Senator
Of “Bullet Vote Campaign”
Violently shaking his finger and menacing the former Senator, Moriarty
follower Jeff Horn, the municipal Democratic chairman, allegedly attacked
Sen. Russo for what he called “a bullet vote campaign that cost Tom Rodgers
the election”, a charge the Russos have denied.

Mayor John
Russo Jr. |
Young Russo and Moriarty were colleagues and shared office space until early
last year, but Moriarty’s passion for surrounding himself with people he can
control, to the detriment of a serious program, finally ended the
relationship.
Many believe strong issues were available last year which could have
devastated the GOP, but Moriarty and his candidates put together a weak
campaign effort that emphasized a big profit for Moriarty who doubles as
publicist and campaign strategist, but came up very short on real substance.
Lack Of Moriarty Credibility Produced Very Close Election
The result was a close election which should have been an easy Democratic
victory with two winners instead of one. Some observers believe it was the
public greed of losing GOP candidate Virginia Haines that enabled the
Democrats to win even one seat as Richard Larsen won a close victory.
The rest is history as bad blood among Democrats threw away their first
opportunity in more than twenty years to control the patronage and the local
government in Dover Township, as Russo Jr. and the two remaining GOP
committee members forged a coalition that now controls patronage
and appointments.

Furey For
Mayor? |
John Furey Will Be A Candidate For Mayor
In other exciting news, the Asbury Park Press gave six column inches to
Committeeman John Furey’s announcement that he would be the Regular Democrat
candidate for mayor in the change of government primary election to be held
June 3rd. The Press article noted that the Russos “have been critical of
Dover Democratic Club President Jack Moriarty’s leadership, saying the
campaign strategist forces Democrats to support his views or risk being
ostracized.” Only 1.4 of the six column inches in the Press article actually
mentioned Furey.
