Well • • • There’s
Good News And There’s Bad News
The Good News Is The
Scarpelli Administration Has Acquired 33 More Acres Of Open Space
(Silverman Tract) And Remains Many Miles Ahead Of The
Development-Friendly Local Government And Planning Board In Dover
Township
The Bad News Is The Brick Democrats
Apparently Have Accepted Political Contributions From Local Little
Leagues, And Two Local Little Leagues Were Willing To Make The
Contributions
Brick Township: The Scarpelli
administration has purchased the Silverman Tract, 33 acres of open
space which will be preserved by Brick Township.
The property is located on Route 88 across from the Laurel Square
Shopping Center.
The tract has 1000 feet of frontage on Route 88 and is comprised of
woods and wetlands.
The price of the acquisition is $1.5 million which equates out to
about $45,000 per acre.
Scarpelli Said The Silverman Property Would
Have Been Developed Very Soon
Mayor Joseph Scarpelli said the property would have been developed
very soon if it was not acquired by the local government.
According to Mayor Scarpelli, there were both residential and
commercial developers interested in the site. The acquisition was
funded with the assistance of state grants and loans.
The Silverton tract acquisition puts Bricktown, the county’s second
largest community, even further ahead of Dover Township in the race to
acquire open space before the developers grab it.
In four years of foot dragging, the governing body in Toms River
messed up a number of important projects and is now embroiled in legal
disputes with developers and politically connected land owners who got
there first.
Scarpelli pointed out in a statement to the Asbury Park Press that the
Silverman Tract acquisition makes more than 70 acres of open space now
owned by the township in the Midstreams area.
Scarpelli: Vitally Important We Preserve These Acres
“It is vitally important that we preserve these acres to prevent
further loss of habitat and prevent future traffic congestion in this
congested area”, Scarpelli told the Press.
In other Brick news, John Barrett, former GOP mayoral candidate and a
titular leader of the loyal opposition, was once again derelict in his
responsibility to comment on the shortcomings of the Democratic
majority.
Barrett left it to the Asbury Park Press to uncover the fact that two
Brick Little League organizations made clearly tainted contributions
to Brick Pride, the Political Action Committee of the Democratic
Municipal Committee, a source for campaign funding for local
Democratic campaigns in Brick.
Contributions to Brick Pride are laundered through to the local
campaign organization every two years.
So, if it were not for the sharp eyes of the Press reporter, Joseph
Picard, the Little League money, amounting to a total of $2500, would
have been spent without any real disclosure, to pay for the propaganda
of Democratic candidates running later this year for the four open
seats on the Brick Council.
Blandina Says There’s Nothing Wrong With
Little League Contributions To Democrats
Brick Democrat municipal chairman Mike Blandina, apparently speaking
for Democratic Mayor Scarpelli, said there was nothing wrong with the
Little League contributions because he checked with his accountant who
said there was nothing wrong with the contributions.
Later, Blandina said that Scarpelli told him to make contributions
back to the two Little Leagues in the amount of the original
contributions, but there was no comment on how Little League officials
were dumb enough to pay $150 a couple for Democratic dinner
tickets from the Little League treasury.
There was also no comment from Blandina or Scarpelli or Barrett as to
why several of the quarterly 2001 Democrat Brick Pride reports were
filed late with the Election Law Enforcement Commission, in apparent
violation of the election laws. 3/05/03
