SOURCE OF FUNDS QUESTIONED
The Dover Township Republican Victory Team (which consists of
Van Speirs, his wife and oldest son) adamantly reaffirm that they
had no part in the telephone campaign or attack flyers that were
launched last weekend. "We are not affiliated with the group
Voters for Responsible Government, nor are we affiliated with the
Democratic organization," Speirs' wife, Linda said Thursday.
"The Republican club leaders would like to connect us to the
Democrats claiming that 'outside forces' attempted to 'meddle in
the Republican primary.' The truth is," Mrs. Speirs said, "if
someone meddled, it was through their own candidate. We are just a
family trying to get involved in our community, hoping to teach
our children about civic responsibility. We have absolutely no
connections."
Mrs. Speirs questions the source of funding for the Voters for
Responsible Government committee, in light of the fact a
fundraiser was held by Speirs' employer, Gravatt Geller and
Associates, Inc. on the night after this committee was formed.
"This was a well-organized effort, planned long ago, reminiscent
of politics at it's worst--the kind we wished to eliminate with
the vote for a change in government," Mrs. Speirs said. "A few
weeks ago, John Russo, Jr. was quoted as saying it was dangerous
to play games with how someone makes a living. If the residents of
Dover Township look closely, they will see who is really playing
games!"
Though many believe the smear campaign was launched in an
effort to smear the Russo campaign, Mrs. Speirs believes they were
actually designed to smear her husband's campaign. "If someone
were trying to help Van win, they would have focused on his issues
and good principles instead of trying to portray him as a
religious extremist," she said. "Most voters back away from such
tactics. Fortunately for Mr. Russo, these tactics worked, but they
are foreign to Van's nature."
Mrs. Speirs believes that her husband must be a real threat to
the politicians because he is a political outsider with a clean
record. "We were hoping the campaign tricks would end on
Wednesday," she said. "However, the GOP leaders are still trying
to discredit Van's goodness, connect us to a conspiracy, and ruin
his employer."
