Becoming A Republican Last July Saying County Democrat Leadership Is
“Too Self Serving”, Is Now A Self Serving Democrat Again: But He
Writes Himself In For Mayor As An “Independent”
Republicans Wouldn’t Give Him A
Patronage Job, So DeBella Bolts For The Second Time In Eleven Months,
Saying Beachwood Republicans Are “Corrupt”

Beachwood: Last
July, Councilman Robert DiBella announced he was leaving the
Democratic party to become a Republican, partly because he thought the
Ocean County Democratic leadership was “too self serving”, too
preoccupied with personal agendas - and didn’t do enough to resolve
intra-party disputes in Beachwood, So. Toms River and Lacey Township.
DiBella
said the Republicans in Beachwood represented “good government”, and
for the last eleven months, DiBella has been a stalwart for the GOP.
Last Tuesday, however, DiBella filed
papers to run for Mayor as an Independent in the wake of a letter in
which he urged Beachwood Democrats to write him in as a Democratic
candidate for mayor.

Both DiBella and former Councilman
Thomas Schiffermiller received 29 votes for the Democratic mayoralty
nomination, which has since officially been declared a tie by the
County Clerk’s office.

Charges Corruption, But Doesn’t Present
Any Evidence To Back Up The Charge
DiBella
told the Ocean County Observer; “I recently remembered why I became
involved in Beachwood politics: it was to put an end to corruption,
conflicts of interest, cover-ups, play for pay games, nepotism and
inept leadership.”
“Unfortunately, all and more still exist
today”, DiBella, who has for the past eleven months been part of the
leadership he called “inept”, added piously.
But he did not identify the “corruption”
or the “conflicts of interest”, or elaborate on any of his other
allegations.
And DiBella, who did not present a
single scrap of evidence or information to back up his charges, said
he would bypass the Ocean County Prosecutor’s office and go straight
to the State Attorney General where, he said, his submission would
elicit some “interest”.
Hoped They Would Give Him A Cushy
Patronage Job?
The truth, of course, is that DiBella,
as a Democrat, contributed to Democratic disunity in all three towns
mentioned by him when he left the Democrats last year, and rumors
continued for the period he was a Republican that he only joined the
GOP because he hoped they would give him a cushy patronage job,
something that becomes less likely each time he switches parties.
Now, he will have another opportunity to
persuade County Chairman Fred Potter, one of the Democrat leaders he
knifed in the back last year, to help resolve the South Toms River,
Lacey and Beachwood infighting that cost so many local seats last year
in two of these towns, infighting that was caused in part by DiBella
himself.

The Republican administration of Mayor
Hal Morris reacted with dispatch to repudiate DiBella’s corruption
charges at a council meeting by sending a letter DiBella wrote to them
to the prosecutor’s office for investigation to clear themselves of
any suspicion.
Cold Feet: Gutless Councilman Did Not
Even
Attend Council Meeting To Back Up His Charges
In a gutless display of cold feet,
DiBella did not attend the council meeting, even though he is a member
of the governing body, saying he had “personal business” that
apparently took precedence over the public business he was elected to
transact.
Biggest Phoney In Town??
“This guy is the biggest phoney in town,
whether he’s a Republican, a Democrat or an Independent; it’s all the
same, he plays to the cheap seats every time and never backs up any of
his wild charges”, said a GOP official who did not want to be directly
quoted.
When he split to the GOP last year,
DiBella was the only Democrat on the governing body.
