Parkway And State Officials New Proposed Whitty Road, Route 571 Interchanges
Won’t Do A Thing For Traffic Gridlock Problem, Even If Construction Is
Expedited And Design Is Amended
Dover Township:
Township Committeeman “Doctor” John Furey,
Democratic candidate for Mayor and owner of the worst attendance record on
the township committee, has now made it official: he is not going to attend
anything he doesn’t absolutely have to, even if it is important and right
there at town hall in Dover Township.
The latest Furey “oversight” casualty, which
includes no-shows for every one of the Democratic Town Council candidates,
is the recent hearing and public information session held by Garden State
Parkway and Ocean County officials to discuss plans for two new interchanges
between mileposts 83 and 84 in Dover Township.
Ocean County Engineer Ron Lotrecchio said the
two new interchanges, which would let traffic off on Whitty Road and Route
571, would be a “big improvement” to traffic flows in the area.
Mayor Russo Not Sure About New Parkway
Interchanges;
GOP Candidates Ask Numerous Questions
Dover Township Mayor John Russo, a Republican
candidate for a full four term in the November election, was not so sure,
saying the plan needed more study regarding its impact on local traffic
before he could offer unqualified approval.
Russo and Republican Council candidates were there, and they asked numerous
questions about the proposal.

Jim Mancini |
“We Want To Hear What People Think”:
Freeholder Jim Mancini
Freeholder James J. Mancini said “we want to
hear what people think.” Mancini is the liaison to the county engineering
department. The Parkway hearing was the latest in a series of meetings
missed by Furey, the Democratic Organization candidate for Mayor, and
township committee liaison to the Dover Municipal Utilities Authority.
Furey
Has Never Attended A Single DMUA Meeting
Furey,
anointed Mayoral candidate of the Democratic organization, has never
attended a DMUA meeting, and never toured DMUA facilities despite
nearly three years on the Township Committee and numerous invitations to do
so.
Furey and
Committeeman Richard Larsen, one of the Democrat Council
candidates, want to dissolve the DMUA and put its assets in the township treasury
to subsidize the township budget as an alternative to spending cuts.
Russo, Brush Oppose Furey-Larsen DMUA
Dissolution Plan
Russo and independent mayoral candidate Paul
Brush are opposed to the Furey-Larsen dissolution plan which, many officials
believe, would ultimately cause a big sewer rate increase and a big tax
increase as soon as Furey and Larsen got through squandering the DMUA’s
reserve capital.
Furey
surfaced with the worst attendance record on the committee after missing
three straight township committee meetings in April on a vacation, his
second extended vacation in six months.
Missed Three Straight, Including Iraqi
Freedom Recognition Meeting
The three meetings he missed in April included
the township committee rally in behalf of the men and women who represented
Dover Township and Ocean County in operation Iraqi Freedom.
In December, 2002, Furey Missed The Two
Most Important Meetings Of The Year
The latest Furey absenteeism comes on top of
his failure to attend possibly the two most important township committee
meetings of 2002.
Furey
took off for South America on a Christmas vacation which included a stop in
Texas, and his absences were noticeable because the new Democratic majority
was trying to put together a reorganization program, an effort which failed,
partially because Furey simply wasn’t there.
