Toms River: The township committeeman who had the worst
attendance record on the governing body and, as the Democrat mayoral
hopeful, abandoned his fellow candidates ten days before the recent
election to throw his support to an “independent”, is now the “Acting”
President of the Dover Township Democratic Organization.
“Doctor” John Furey takes over as “Acting” President of the local
Democrats from Thomas Rodgers, the election disclosure scofflaw who
violated numerous election regulations in his two tries for local
office, both of them with former township committeeman Richard Larsen
as his running mate.
Glaring Election Law Violations
Rodgers and Larsen signed reports to the Election Law Enforcement
Commission which, despite Larsen’s status as a pubic accountant,
contained glaring violations of important election disclosure
regulations.
The alleged violations are now under investigation.
Rodgers became “Acting” President of the Democrat organization when
former party leader “Doctor” Jack Moriarty resigned all of his party
offices back in August following his complicity in an alleged
extortion and blackmail attempt involving bogus insurance fraud
charges against mayoral candidate Paul Brush.
Moriarty Extortion Charges Under Investigation By Harvey
The charges against Moriarty and others are now under investigation by
State Attorney General Peter Harvey.

Mayor-Elect
Brush |
Brush refused to be blackmailed into leaving the mayoral race but,
eight weeks later, ten days before the November election, Furey bowed
out of the race following an odiferous deal with Brush which featured
a peripheral agreement, insisted on by Furey, where Moriarty was to
receive a $50,000 “consultant’s fee” payoff to ice the deal.
The “consultant’s fee”, $50,594 to be majestically precise, was paid
to Moriarty in check form by Furey’s defunct campaign organization,
“The Furey Team”, on October 30th.

Chairman
Potter |

"Doctor" Moriarty |
To effectuate the $50,594 Moriarty payoff transaction, the “Furey
Team”, according to papers filed with ELEC and signed by both Rodgers
and Larsen, used funds laundered through the “Ocean County Democratic
Committee," a finance operation under the direct auspices and control
of Democrat County Chairman Fred Potter.
$50,000 Moriarty Payoff Is Focus Of More ELEC Violations
The Moriarty payoff was the focus of further serious election law
violations because the “contribution” of $50,000 in Moriarty payoff
funds, received by the Furey Team treasury on October 29th, was not
reported to the Election Law Enforcement Commission within 48 hours as
required by law, so the transaction was not disclosed and available to
the public until after the election.
Furthermore, the actual payoff itself, made to Moriarty on October
30th according to papers signed by Furey, Larsen and Rodgers, was also
not reported to ELEC within the required 48 hours, so the law was
flaunted in both directions, and the laundered funds from Potter, as
well as the $50,000 Moriarty payoff itself, did not become public
knowledge until after the election, a situation which involves gross
violations of the election law.
More Reorganization In A Few Weeks
“Acting President” Furey will hold the local Democrat leadership post
until the organization officially reorganizes in a few weeks.
OceanCountyPolitics correspondents, commentators and observers
will be watching carefully and offering more coverage as Dover
Democrats continue impulsively on the path of neurotic self
destruction.
