Fiure Offers Correction For OCP Story On Proliferation Of "Confidential Aide" Hirings

Councilman Michael Fiure

Mayor Paul  Brush

Emphasizes The TOWNSHIP, Not The County, Is Paying His Health Benefits As An Elected Official

Mayor Brush Said Eliminating Medical Benefits For Council Members Is "Cost Cutting Measure #1"; But He Shut Up About It When Fiure Got The County Job

Toms River: Township Councilman Michael Fiure has asked for a correction in an OCP story entitled "Pricking The Dover Township Fig Leaves - Part II." The story said the cost of lawyer Fiure's new "Confidential Aide" job in the County Parks Department, "including benefits," is $100,000.

Whacking Local Taxpayers, Not The County

Fiure told OCP he wants to make sure everybody knows he is whacking local taxpayers, not the county, for the benefits, which cost about $12,000 over and above his part time salary of $8900. The article included the following two paragraphs on Fiure's new job:

"Fiure Gets $100,000 "Confidential" Aide Appointment

"Newly elected Councilman Michael Fiure was appointed by the Republican Board of Freeholders as "Confidential" Aide in the county parks departments after Freeholder John Bartlett said it would be a good idea for the county to have another lawyer on the payroll.

"Fiure's "Confidential" Aide compensation, including benefits, is approximately $100,000 plus $8900 more for being a councilman."

We Apologize For The Mistake: Correction Is As Follows:

Fiure's "Confidential" Aide compensation, including benefits, is about $86,000 plus about $20,900 in additional compensation, including benefits, for being a councilman in Dover Township.

Brush Wanted To Eliminate Benefits For Council Members

Mayor Paul Brush's "#1 Cost Cutting Measure" according to several large advertisements published in the Ocean County Observer and the Asbury Park Press just prior to the 2003 election, was to "eliminate medical benefits for the Mayor and Council."

Mayor Shut Up As Seventeen Lawyers Were Hired By Township

But the mayor shut up about the "#1 cost cutting measure" and all of the other cost cutting measures as he and the council (including Fiure) proceeded to hire nearly every politically-connected attorney in the Ocean County yellow pages to start off the new year with a flourish of creative spending.

Tax Increase Only Rumors

There are rumors of a modest tax increase in Dover Township this year. Those of our readers who wish to reprise the article that has now been corrected can do so by clicking as follows:
