Township Of Brick - Politics in Brick became a little less cordial last week as John Barrett, operator of a WebSite that is a front for mayoral candidate Stephen Acropolis, put up a picture of a camel in the former town hall parking space of former Democratic councilman Leon Mowadia.

The caption was "Did Mowadia bring his car to town hall?"

Mayor Scarpelli Says It's A Racial Slur

Mayor Joseph Scarpelli took offense to the picture because Mowadia is of Lebanese and Syrian descent, and accused Barrett of a racial slur. The mayor also demanded Barrett resign from his membership on the Township Alliance Committee on Alcoholism, Drug Abuse and Youth Services.

Barrett said the camel picture was not racially motivated or intended as a slur because, as he told the Ocean County Observer, he always thought Mowadia was Italian.

Mowadia disagreed with Barrett, however, suggesting that "in today's environment, how could he put something like that up? The inference is totally offensive."

Barrett Unavailable For More Comment

After the Italian remark, Barrett became unavailable for any more newspaper comments, and it is reported he is negotiating with Community Memorial Hospital for major surgery to get his foot permanently removed from his mouth.
